2008 AFL Season

Live or slightly delayed matches from this year’s 2008 AFL Season are shown on Astro (channel 514) on Friday nights (usually 6pm), Saturday afternoon (usually 12.30pm and evening (sometimes) and Sunday (usually 11.30am). Our sponsor Finnegans shows the games in their bar in Jalan Sultan Ismail (near Bukit Bintang). There is now no reason for you to feel deprived of good Aussie Rules action with this establishment showing AFL as well as the opportunity to see The Warriors live in action.

The2008 Season is well underway

After intensive Pre-Season training, the season is well and truly under way. The Warriors began the season with a huge home win against Vietnam, a honourable loss to our bitter rivals Singapore in Singapore and a sterling performance to finish runners-up to Hong Kong in the 4 nation Manila Cup. Our next international games are against the Jakarta Bintangs (June 28th) and Singapore (August 23rd), both at home, leading up the most important event of the year the Asian Championships in Singapore (September 6th).

Intraclub matches are scheduled for 19th July and 2nd August.

New players are always welcome at the club and should not hesitate to make contact and come out and enjoy a run around the park with the Warriors. The club trains regularly on Saturdays at 2.00pm at the Astaka Sports Field (behind the Armada Hotel), near Cobra Sports Club. Further details regarding training and matches can be located here.

Asian Championships

This what the year is all about!! The Asian Championships is an annual event , now in its 10th year in which the major teams from the Asian region fight out over a long hard day who has the right to crowned champion of Asia. Malaysia hosted the competition in 2004, Manila in 2005, Jakarta in 2006, and Bangkok in 2007. The Championships will be held this year in Singapore on the weekend of September 6th, 2008. If you have never been to an Asian Championships as a player or a spectator, put this in your calendar. It is a weekend you will never forget and you will be back the following year for certain.

Malaysia has never won the Asian Championships but with the competition in 2008 in near proximity this offers our best chance. The standard of play has been increasing each year, and with games being played in a round robin system, over a full day where teams may have to play up to 5 20 minute matches, fitness, stamina and numbers are vital.

Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta and Bali as usual will provide strong competition and we can also expect teams from Japan, China, and Vietnam to compete. So get involved and help the Warriors create history by lifting the trophy on Asian football’s biggest day.

AFL Grand Final Day

Every year the Malaysian Warriors hold an event where lovers of the AFL can get together and watch the ultimate game of the year. In recent years the event has been held at the Monkey Bar in the Legend Hotel as that was the only venue in town which could guarantee a live broadcast of the event. With Astro now certain to show the game there are now more potential venues and the Warriors Committee is currently sourcing a venue. For the Australian community (and our local and expatriate friends) the AFL Grand Final is always a huge social occasion, with fun and games, raffles, pies, hot dogs, sausage rolls and all the accoutrements of the big game. Last years event was a massive success and we were marvelously supported by our special guest, Simon Madden, former champion Essendon ruckman. This is a family event and children are welcome on the day. For more information on this year’s event please check back at a later date (still in organisational phase at this stage) as the grand final is not played until the last Saturday of September (27th September, 2008).

Charity Golf Day

This event has been run for the last 4 years and successfully raised money for the Warriors charity of choice. In recent years the money raised was split between the Stepping Stone Orphanage and in 2004 the victims of the tsunami. The event takes place the day before the Grand Final and gives participants to mingle with our AFL guests and even play a round with them.

Home Games

Home games are held at the Alice Smith International School and all are welcome to bring there families down and enjoy a good day out in the sun. Food and Drinks are made available on the day.

Away Games

In order for the Asian League to survive means travel for all teams. Where ever possible the club tries to aid players in making the tours. The more players we get the easier it is on the day we play.

The Irish Connection

The Warriors enjoy a social and playing partnership with the local Gaelic Football Club ( Danny McBride danny@platocapital.com). International Rules games are in the pipeline and we try to support each other at games and functions. Surprisingly, both teams seem to enjoy a drink and Finnegan’s in Jalan Sultan Ismail is our bar of choice.
